The oldest daughter of Philip Berrigan and Elizabeth McAlister, Frida was raised in the Jonah House community in Baltimore. As members of various “Plowshares” nonviolent civil disobedience actions, her parents were incarcerated repeatedly, serving eleven years between them over the course of their twenty-nine-year marriage.

“Nuclear weapons ruined my life,” Frida wrote, “and I wouldn’t have it any other way.”

Frida’s own journey of advocacy and urban farming encapsulates the spirit of service and community activism with which she was raised.
