An Evening of Celebration

Wednesday, April 24, 2024
5:30 pm – 8:00 pm

Honoring the Recipients of the 2024 IVC Madonna della Strada Award:

Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless
Executive Director,
Linda Flores-Tober

Ignatian Social Justice Committee of the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola
Chair, Laura de Boisblanc

In recognition of outstanding service
to the community

The Madonna della Strada Award is named after the first church that Ignatius and the early Jesuits obtained to serve the urban poor in the heart of Rome, the Sancta Maria della Strada. Today, the Madonna della Strada Award is presented to a person or organization which reflects the Ignatian values of giving direct service to those who are poor in service of creating a more just society.

Ignatian Social Justice Committee of the Church of St. Ignatius Loyola
Chair, Laura de Boisblanc

After a career in technology, Laura joined both the Ignatian Volunteer Corps and Ignatian Social Justice. When Laura became the ISJ Chair, the ministry began to focus on migration. The work includes organizing immersion trips to the southern border, prayer services, panel discussions on migration and help at immigration legal clinics and organizations that provide humanitarian aid.

In April 2023, ISJ became involved on a more personal level. ISJ joined the Jesuit Relief Services Migrant Accompaniment Program that welcomes migrants into their new communities. ISJ welcomed and befriended six families with children, aiming to be a comforting and stable presence in their lives. ISJ welcomes these newest New Yorkers with a shared meal, helps them access services from both the city and the church, goes with them to find seasonal clothing, and walks with them in their legal process. In January ISJ and Regis High School started Homework Helper / English Conversation sessions for our families.

Laura and her husband John are blessed with two sons, a daughter-in-law and two grandchildren.

Elizabeth Coalition to House the Homeless
Executive Director, Linda Flores-Tober

For 34 years  Linda has vigorously advocated and created programs for the unhoused and housing insecure of Union County NJ.  She believes that a home is as essential to the human person for life as water and air.

Linda started out working with the elderly as a nursing home administrator.  When she got married, she changed careers to work in the field of housing.  She has remained there ever since starting an emergency winter shelter and the first functioning Code Blue program in NJ , expanding the transitional housing program, and expanding the Coalition’s mission to address the lack of affordable housing by establishing the Permanent Housing Initiative that is now a key strategic initiative for the agency.  Throughout her career, Linda has spoken up and given a voice to the voiceless, advocating for more affordable housing and services for the homeless. She also doubles as a wife and mother for her husband, Carlos and her two children Nicholas and Jane.
