Honoring the Recipients of the 2022 IVC Madonna della Strada Award:

Cabrini Immigrant Services of New York
Executive Director Javier Ramirez-Baron
Ignatian Volunteer – Julia Mucci

In recognition of outstanding service to the community

The Madonna della Strada Award is named after the first church that Ignatius and the early Jesuits obtained to serve the urban poor in the heart of Rome, the Sancta Maria della Strada. Today, the Madonna della Strada Award is presented to a person or organization which reflects the Ignatian values of giving direct service to those who are poor in service of creating a more just society.

Cabrini Immigrant Services of New York City

Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC (CIS-NYC) provides essential services to immigrants in the spirit of Mother Cabrini, patron saint of immigrants and founder of the Missionary Sisters of the Sacred Heart of Jesus Their mission is to empower immigrants, their families and their communities through education, access to essential services, civic participation and community building. They strive to work together with the immigrant community to create a more inclusive society by fostering justice, dignity and respect. CIS-NYC provides immigration legal representation, food pantry services, scholarships, access to social services, leadership development, and civic participation to more than 2,000 underserved immigrant families every year.

Executive Director Javier Ramirez-Baron

Javier has been the Executive Director of Cabrini Immigrant Services of NYC (CIS-NYC) since 2012. He is a Licensed Master Social Worker and is certified by the Department of Justice (DOJ) to provide immigration counseling and representation.

Prior to working at CIS-NYC, Javier provided crisis intervention and emergency services to a diverse immigrant population living with AIDS and HIV at Housing Works (2007). In 2008 Javier helped plan, implement, and coordinate a collaborative project between “Queens Community House’s Action Group” and “Friends of Travers Park,” a local civic non-immigrant organization, around a local park in Jackson Heights, Queens.  His work was highlighted by The New York Immigration Coalition during its 20th anniversary celebration in 2008 and in 2013 NY1 News Channel named him “New Yorker of The Week.” A proud immigrant from Colombia, Javier earned a master in social work degree from the Silberman School of Social Work at Hunter College and a bachelor of Industrial Engineering from Universidad Autonoma de Occidente in Cali, Colombia.
