Dear IVC Friends,
On this All Saints Day, we awaken to the news that our friend and mentor Jim Kelley has died this morning at 6:40 a.m. EDT.
Jim was a dedicated IVC service corps member, a determined Director and champion of IVC in the Nation’s Capital and, most recently, a deserving recipient of IVC’s highest honor, the Madonna Della Strada award, which was presented to him a mere six weeks ago. Jim was recovering from COVID at the time and was unable to attend the ceremony. He suffered a stroke around October 10 and unfortunately never recovered from it.
Jim had many different identities throughout his 85 years of life – Salvatorian priest, U.S. Department of State emissary, IVC volunteer and staff member, spouse of Margo Tully and Holy Trinity Georgetown parishioner just to name a few.
He held IVC in incredible esteem, stating to IVC’s Vice President for Advancement, Marketing, and Communications Steve Eberle, “The thing that separates IVC from other ‘volunteer organizations’ is the combination of the secular and the spiritual – volunteer activities supported and strengthened by faith – a unique foundation. This is a sacred space and a sacred activity. I think there are people who will respond to this concept. I did!”
We are all privileged to have known him.
Michael J. Goggin, M.A.
