About IVC: Faith in Action Through Service

Connecting Experience, Purpose, and Spiritual Growth

IVC is a national nonprofit that connects adults 50+ with community-based organizations serving people on the margins. Rooted in Ignatian Spirituality, our corps members integrate their faith, skills, and life experience to bring hope, dignity, and compassion to those in need.

Since 1995, IVC has grown into a network of 550+ corps members serving with 350+ nonprofit partners in over 25 U.S. states—with even more opportunities through our Virtual Program.

Through hands-on service, our corps members not only address immediate community needs but also embark on a journey of personal and spiritual development. Each volunteer experience is designed to foster meaningful connections, allowing them to reflect on their values and deepen their understanding of faith in action.

By engaging with diverse communities, corps members cultivate a sense of purpose that enriches both their lives and the lives of those they serve.

Our Mission

The Ignatian Volunteer Corps (IVC) provides men and women retirees the opportunity to serve the needs of people who are poor, to work for a more just society, and to grow deeper in Christian faith by reflecting and praying in the Ignatian tradition.

How IVC Works

IVC members commit to one to two days of service per week (September–June) with nonprofits in education, healthcare, social services, and more. In addition to their service, corps members participate in:

Monthly faith-sharing meetings for reflection and connection

Occasional retreats to deepen their spiritual journey

One-on-one spiritual reflection guided by Ignatian principles

The result? A transformative experience that benefits both the communities served and the corps members themselves.

About-Mission

A Brief History of IVC

The Ignatian Volunteer Corps was founded in 1995 by two Jesuit priests, Fr. Jim Conroy, S.J. and Fr. Charlie Costello, S.J., in response to Vatican II’s call for laypeople to be more fully engaged in the Church’s mission. They envisioned a program where retired professionals could serve others while deepening their spiritual lives.

What began with just 11 women and men serving in three cities has since grown into a nationwide movement, impacting hundreds of communities across the U.S.

Today, IVC continues to expand, with increasing demand for both in-person and virtual service opportunities.
