Thank you for inquiring about becoming an Ignatian Volunteer! You are welcome to contact IVC New Orleans Regional Director Lisa LaFleur Schillace directly to discuss the details of the program and whether there are any upcoming information sessions or monthly meetings you might be able to attend to get a feel for the program.
IVC requires a significant commitment. In fact, our partner service sites consider our volunteers to be adjunct staff and really depend upon their consistent presence and reliable work, as they would any part-time staff person. The Ignatian Volunteer community will also rely on each of its members to attend and actively participate in the monthly gatherings to create an intimate spiritual community built on trust and shared experiences.
If IVC appears to be a good fit for you, Lisa will provide you with an application to complete and submit. The IVC application asks about your religious background and work experience, includes a self-evaluation, and requests a work reference and a spiritual reference. This document is a tool that will help Lisa recommend some potential service sites that will reflect your specific values and interests and benefit from your unique talents and skills.
Once she’s received your application, Lisa will schedule an in-person meeting with you. Following that meeting, you may visit several sites before you find the right “match.” Lisa will also pair you with a spiritual reflector trained in Ignatian spirituality to be a companion along your service journey with IVC.
The service term in New Orleans is September through June, so most placements will occur over the summer. However, volunteer applications are welcome all year. Lisa will work on a case-by-case basis to find the best timing to welcome new members into the program.
