A Valentine Story of Faith

Happy Valentine’s Day!  Instead of sending you a card, chocolates, or a bouquet of flowers to celebrate love today, I’m sending you an electronic inspiration.  A real-life example of love IVC style.   This is a story of one of many married couples who serve together through IVC.

Julia and Tony Albrecht, who will celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary this summer, have served as Ignatian Volunteers for 14 and 10 years, respectively.  They demonstrate love for each other and true service for their neighbor as they write resumes for residents of a prison re-entry program and teach construction math and English to immigrants.  Their lives exemplify the magnificence of selfless love.

In his teaching, Christ calls us to love God with all our heart, mind and strength and to love our neighbor as ourselves.  We are asked to strive to do this in our marriages, with our families, and with those around us.

This selfless level of our call to love can be challenging.

Loving our neighbor means extending ourselves to those most in need, and Ignatian Volunteers do just this.  They come to know men, women and children living in marginalized situations, love them, serve them, become neighbors.  Love transforms these relationships.

Enjoy this gift of reading about Julia and Tony – their love and service inspire as do all the men and women of IVC who bring love through service into our communities each day.

Happy Valentine’s Day!  May love, that is God in us, live in, with and through you to our world.

Blessings,

Mary
